CBSE reports scanning issues in new OSM evaluation system; 20 answer-sheet mix-ups and 13,000 manual evaluations flagged
The Union education ministry is preparing to expand its scrutiny of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on-screen marking (OSM) system, moving towards a comprehensive audit of the platform’s entire implementation process.
This includes examining stages ranging from the tendering process to final execution, following reports of technical glitches and concerns raised by parents, teachers, and other stakeholders. The decision comes amid widespread criticism that the system was rolled out in a rushed manner while handling nearly 10 million answer scripts.
Authorities have stated that the immediate priority is to stabilise the re-evaluation and verification portal so that students can smoothly access scanned copies of their answer sheets, submit objections, and request verification without disruptions.
The ministry has indicated that IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras teams are actively working on fixing system architecture issues and ensuring the portal becomes fully functional.
The CBSE had also postponed the launch of its re-evaluation and verification portal from May 29 to June 1, 2026, to ensure a more stable and transparent experience for students.
Officials confirmed that around 20 cases of answer-sheet mix-ups were identified after results were declared, increasing concerns about system reliability.
Additionally, nearly one in four Class 12 students reportedly applied for scanned copies of their answer sheets, reflecting a 208% rise compared to the previous year. The ministry also stated that the company involved, Coempt Edu Teck, has not yet received payment pending contractual review.
Once the re-evaluation process is completed, a detailed audit by IIT experts will assess the system from procurement to implementation, and corrective action may be taken against any officials or companies found responsible for lapses.
The portal is expected to reopen on June 1 for students who have already obtained scanned copies, allowing them to raise question-wise objections for re-evaluation.
