IMD issues red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar amid forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, with extremely heavy showers likely at isolated locations over the coming days.

The alert comes as Mumbai continues to experience intense monsoon activity, with several parts of the city already recording more than 70 mm of rainfall within a span of five hours.According to IMD forecasts, the rainfall intensity is expected to increase further, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph. The red alert has been issued for Saturday and Sunday, indicating a high risk of disruption due to weather conditions.

Civic authorities reported that Mumbai received over 100 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending Friday morning, with the island city averaging 126 mm, the eastern suburbs 110 mm, and the western suburbs 114 mm.Specific areas such as Wadi Bunder, Malabar Hill, and Sandhurst Road recorded particularly high rainfall levels.

Despite continuous heavy showers since Thursday night, transport systems including suburban trains, metro services, and BEST buses were reported to be operational, though commuters faced delays and traffic congestion across several routes.Low-lying areas including Dadar, Andheri, Goregaon, and Parel experienced temporary waterlogging.

The weather conditions have also led to safety concerns, with at least two rain-related fatalities reported in the city this week, including incidents involving a manhole accident and a falling tree.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with official weather warnings as heavy monsoon activity persists across the region.
