Four beluga whales were rescued in an unprecedented international effort after Marineland of Niagara Falls, a bankrupt aquarium and theme park, faced euthanasia threats for its animals.The rescue involved relocating Acadia, Lillooet, Osiris, and Sierra to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, with additional belugas sent to Texas and San Diego.Scientists and veterinarians coordinated with Canadian and U.S.government agencies to transport the whales via air and road in specially designed water-filled containers, ensuring minimal stress during the 72-hour journey.The mission highlighted logistical challenges, including border crossings and compliance with international animal trade treaties.

While critics called for transparency and an end to captive breeding, the Shedd Aquarium emphasized its commitment to high-quality care without breeding plans.

The rescued belugas are now acclimating to their new habitats under round-the-clock monitoring, marking a significant milestone in marine conservation efforts.
