Utumishi Girls Academy reopens following dormitory fire tragedy that killed 16 students
Authorities in Nairobi are investigating a fatal shooting incident that led to the death of youth mobiliser Cecil Otieno Ouma following a government youth empowerment forum held at Kariokor Social Hall.
Seven individuals, including two officers attached to Principal Secretary Jacob Fikirini's security detail, have recorded statements as detectives try to piece together conflicting accounts of what transpired after the event. The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday evening shortly after the forum, sparking public outrage and demands for accountability.
According to Ouma’s family and fellow organisers, he had helped mobilise young people to attend the government-sponsored forum and later approached the PS’s vehicle seeking additional transport reimbursement after participants disagreed on the amount issued.Witnesses allege that tensions escalated when Ouma entered the vehicle and was later shot, before being dumped along Park Road.He was rushed to Park Road Nursing Home where he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to the chest and arm.
Police, however, present a different version of events, stating that the PS convoy was surrounded by a large group of youths demanding money, with some allegedly damaging vehicles and stealing officers’ mobile phones.Officers reportedly fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd before leaving the scene.
Notably, the initial police report did not mention any injuries or fatalities, and Ouma’s death was only confirmed hours later after hospital notification.Investigators have since disarmed the two security officers pending ballistic analysis.
Forensic teams are now examining firearms, witness statements, and other evidence to determine where the shooting occurred and whether excessive force was used.
The case has drawn political attention, with leaders and the public demanding clarity and justice over the circumstances surrounding the young mobiliser’s death.
