Kilifi County allocates Sh10 million to support SHA registration for widows and orphans
Joel, a man from Uyoma in Siaya County, has attracted public attention after showcasing his creatively designed rural home developed on a budget of about KSh 950,000.He initially lived in a simba within his father’s compound but decided to establish his own homestead where he could build independently.
The result is a mabati (corrugated iron sheet) house set within a spacious and carefully planned compound that blends functionality with natural beauty.
The home features an open-plan kitchen, a large living room, and an entertainment area that Joel personally designed, reflecting both comfort and practicality.
One of the key highlights of the property is the landscaping, which includes Arabian grass, bougainvillea plants, and neatly arranged trees along a long driveway that gives the homestead a serene, garden-like feel.Joel has also planted various fruit trees such as apples and guavas, ensuring he can pick fruits directly from his compound.
The property includes a chicken shed and plans for future additions like rabbits and vegetable farming, showing his interest in integrated small-scale farming. He explained that the use of mabati was necessary due to the black cotton soil in the area, which affects durability of semi-permanent structures.Construction was not easy as he faced financial challenges, delays, and had to rely on a generator before electricity was available.Despite these setbacks, he completed the home using heavy gauge materials and strong foundations.Joel says he plans to add cabro pathways and more hardscaping in future, further improving the compound.
His story has inspired many Kenyans online, who praised his creativity, self-reliance, and the idea of living within one’s means while still building a beautiful home.
