Photo Captures John Lennon and Yoko Ono Interrupting Their 1969 Peace Protest for Hotel Housekeeping
In June 1973, John Lennon appeared at the Watergate hearings in Washington D.C.with a completely shaved head. While some speculated that his new hairstyle was for the hearings, it was actually part of a personal decision and may have been related to ongoing immigration challenges and his activism.Lennon had shaved his head earlier that month and was photographed at various events showcasing his new look.During the hearings, he remarked to reporters that his haircuts were routine, done every two years, and that he had cut it just two weeks prior. At the time, the Nixon administration was attempting to deport Lennon due to a 1968 UK cannabis conviction.
His clean-cut appearance was a notable contrast to the “long-haired hippie” image that the administration had used to portray him as a dangerous foreign influence.Lennon was also under FBI surveillance because of his anti-war activism.
When questioned about his status on Nixon's “political enemies” list, Lennon responded with humor, noting that he and Ono were neutral and not asked to take sides. This marked the second time Lennon had shaved his head in the early 1970s, the first being in January 1970 as part of a peace campaign with Yoko Ono.
