TCRA launches Season II of Samia Kalamu Awards to recognise excellence in journalism
Dar es Salaam – Joseph Kirati, Creative Lead at The Chanzo, has been honoured as Best Photojournalist of the Year 2025 at the Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT) organized by the Media Council of Tanzania.
The award ceremony held on May 29, 2026, brought together journalists, media leaders, and stakeholders from across the country to celebrate excellence in reporting.
Kirati was recognised for his impactful visual storytelling that highlighted the struggles of residents in Nyatwali Ward, Mara Region, who were reportedly displaced to make way for a wildlife corridor linked to Serengeti National Park.
His work captured the challenges residents faced, including insufficient compensation, demolition of homes, schools, and health facilities, and alleged exhumation of graves without family consent.Kirati joined The Chanzo in late 2021 as a videographer and graphic designer, gradually rising to lead the content production team.Previously, he earned recognition in 2023 as second runner-up for Science and Technology Reporting at EJAT.Colleagues described his award as a reflection of the power of photojournalism in advocating public-interest issues.The Chanzo, a digital-first media initiative founded in 2020, continues to emphasise independent journalism and accountability in Tanzania.
