Nagpur Cyber Police File FIR Against Content Creators Alleged Defamatory Campaign Targeting Nitin Gadkari
The Karnataka High Court on Monday criticised the West Bengal government for requesting additional time to verify the citizenship documents of Rafikul Biswas, a school bus driver detained in Bengaluru. The police had alleged that Biswas, a 32-year-old from West Bengal's Nadia district, was an undocumented Bangladeshi migrant.
Biswas claimed he was an Indian citizen by birth and presented records including a fresh voter ID card issued during Bengal's electoral roll revision. His lawyer argued that citizenship should not depend on the ruling party in a state, highlighting concerns about arbitrary detentions. The court expressed frustration with the government's repeated requests for extensions, emphasizing the need for efficiency.
This incident comes amid nationwide efforts by the Home Ministry to verify undocumented migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar following terror attacks.
Several detainees have been deported or forced into Bangladesh after failing citizenship checks, though some were later repatriated upon proof of Indian origin. The case underscores tensions between state authorities and individuals facing prolonged legal scrutiny.
