Ruto Pledges School Safety Reforms and Support for Families After Utumishi Girls Academy Fire Tragedy
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary 24-hour closure of part of Mombasa Road in Nairobi to facilitate construction works on the Airtel Footbridge project.
According to a public notice issued by the authority, the affected section is on the Nairobi-bound carriageway of the A8 highway between the Airtel Complex and the General Motors area. The closure will begin on the night of Saturday, June 20, 2026, and continue into Sunday, June 21, 2026.KeNHA explained that the closure is necessary to allow the installation of fabricated footbridge beams across the Nairobi-bound lanes. The project forms part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety and infrastructure along one of the country's busiest transport corridors.Motorists travelling towards Nairobi have been advised to expect traffic disruptions and possible delays during the construction period. To minimise inconvenience, KeNHA has provided alternative traffic management arrangements and urged drivers to use the designated diversion routes.
The authority also called on road users to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals who will be deployed on-site to manage vehicle movement and ensure safety.
The announcement serves as an early notice to commuters, transport operators, and businesses that rely on the route so they can plan their journeys accordingly.
Mombasa Road is a critical link connecting Nairobi with key industrial and commercial areas, meaning even short-term closures can significantly affect traffic flow.
KeNHA has encouraged all road users to follow directions provided during the exercise to help ensure the successful installation of the footbridge components and the smooth restoration of normal traffic operations once the works are completed.
