Professor Sylvester Odion Akhaine, a former human rights activist and political science expert, will deliver the 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture on July 23, 2026, at the Sheraton Hotel in Lagos.

The lecture, themed 'The Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections,' aims to explore the intersection of media responsibility, electoral commission oversight, and voter engagement in Nigeria's democratic processes.

Akhaine, who played a key role in Nigeria's return to democracy during the military era, brings extensive experience as a scholar, editor, and journalist.The event, organized by the Nigerian Guild of Editors, seeks to honor Lateef Jakande's legacy as a pioneering journalist and statesman.It will bring together media leaders, public officials, and civil society to reflect on governance, nation-building, and the press's role.Attendees include former Governor Dr.Kayode Fayemi, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and students from top journalism institutions.

The lecture series, started in 2023, highlights critical issues in media and democracy, with past topics ranging from media survival strategies to journalism's role in nation-building.
