Lawyer Njeri Maina Refutes Violence Claims During Gachagua Impeachment

During a tense courtroom session on the impeachment of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, lawyer Jane Njeri Maina firmly defended her actions and dismissed allegations that she was involved in any violence.

Speaking before a three-judge bench, Maina accused the Parliament’s counsel, Moses Kipkogei, of misleading the court by suggesting that she closed her office and rushed to stop public participation.

She clarified that Petition E014 of 2024 was filed on October 2, with orders issued the next day, while public participation in constituencies and county woman representative offices took place on October 4 and 5.Maina referred to official reports and affidavits confirming that Kirinyaga County remained peaceful during the exercise. She also noted that the claims of violence in Kirugoya town were unsupported by the affidavit submitted.Maina cited a National Assembly report indicating that disturbances occurred in Murang’a, Nyandarua, and Nyeri counties, but not in Kirinyaga. She emphasised that she never instigated or supported violence anywhere in Kenya.

The lawyer further criticised the opposing counsel for introducing claims not reflected in affidavits, arguing that these submissions were malicious and intended to undermine the court’s credibility.

The hearing highlighted the need for accuracy in presenting facts during legal proceedings and reaffirmed that Kirinyaga’s public participation process was peaceful.
