Second convoy of 3,865 Amarnath pilgrims departs from Jammu under tight security arrangements
The state of Maharashtra has introduced a restriction on the sale of energy drinks in areas located within a 500-metre radius of schools. The move is aimed at limiting easy access to high-caffeine and stimulant-based beverages among school-going children and adolescents.
Energy drinks, which often contain high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants, have been increasingly scrutinised by health experts for their potential impact on young consumers, including risks related to sleep disruption, behavioural changes, and long-term health concerns when consumed in excess.
According to the policy decision, vendors operating near educational institutions will no longer be permitted to sell such products within the defined perimeter. The intention is to create a healthier school environment and discourage habitual consumption of energy drinks among minors.
Authorities are expected to enforce the restriction through local food and health regulatory bodies, along with routine inspections around school zones.
The decision aligns with broader public health efforts to promote better dietary habits among children and reduce exposure to ultra-processed and stimulant-heavy beverages. While energy drinks remain legal in other commercial zones, the specific buffer zone around schools marks a targeted regulatory approach.
This step is also seen as part of growing awareness around nutrition and preventive health measures in urban and semi-urban educational environments across the state.
