Retired employees of Nairobi County have raised concerns about ongoing delays in receiving their pension benefits.Through Eastleigh South Ward MCA Nicholas Juma, former staff are seeking explanations regarding their pension contributions and the financial obligations owed to retired county workers.

Juma has requested the Nairobi County Assembly to get a statement from the Chairperson of the Sectoral Committee on Labour and Social Welfare about the delayed payments by the Local Authorities Pension Trust (LAPFUND) and the statutory deductions.The Constitution guarantees the right to social security, while the Retirement Benefits Act ensures retirees receive their dues timely.The Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to introduce automatic cost-of-living adjustments for public service pensioners.The Assembly is being asked to confirm if LAPFUND is disbursing benefits on time and to explain any delays.The committee must also disclose the number of retirees yet to receive terminal dues and the outstanding liability owed to LAPFUND.Concerns about statutory pension deductions from current employees are also being addressed.

The situation highlights the need for financial accountability in county governments, as retirees rely on pensions for healthcare, housing, and daily expenses.
