NDC conducts nationwide primaries to endorse Peter Obi for 2027 presidential ticket

The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) is holding nationwide primaries across the country today, May 29, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections. The main purpose of the exercise is to formally ratify Peter Obi as the party’s presidential candidate.

According to party updates, Obi had already been cleared as the sole aspirant after a screening process conducted in Abuja, making his endorsement at today’s primaries largely an affirmation rather than a contested race.

Ahead of the exercise, the Obidient Movement publicly encouraged party members and supporters to remain united and ensure a smooth confirmation process for Obi’s candidacy.

The party also announced adjustments to its electoral timetable due to recent public holidays that affected logistics and travel arrangements for officials and delegates.

In this year’s primaries, while the presidential ticket is expected to be affirmed in Obi’s favour, other positions such as National Assembly, governorship, and State House of Assembly tickets will still be actively contested across different states.

The NDC introduced a unified voting structure, meaning all affirmations and voting processes will be concluded within a single day to streamline operations. The party also introduced a direct grassroots voting system for State House of Assembly candidates to enhance transparency and participation.

Additionally, in a notable policy shift, all screened aspirants were allowed to participate in the process, but only successful candidates will be required to pay nomination fees after results are declared.Official results from the primaries will be compiled by designated national election teams and announced centrally by the NDC National Headquarters.State-level executives have been instructed not to independently declare winners, ensuring a centralized and controlled result announcement process.
