NPA Seizes R326m Assets Linked to Tembisa Hospital Corruption Scandal

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has seized luxury properties and a high-value car collection belonging to Hangwani Maumela, a key figure implicated in the Tembisa Hospital looting scandal.

The assets, valued at R326m, include high-end residences in Gauteng, KZN, and the Western Cape, along with multiple luxury vehicles such as Lamborghinis and a Bentley.

This action follows a forfeiture order granted by the Johannesburg High Court, based on forensic investigations into procurement fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital between 2019 and 2022.The investigation was triggered by a report from late Babita Deokaran, who exposed irregularities in the hospital’s supply chain.Forensic reviews confirmed that 14 entities linked to Maumela’s syndicate benefited unlawfully from contracts worth over R400m.

The NPA highlighted that the assets were used to fund extravagant lifestyles, bribes, and cover bidders, underscoring the systemic corruption undermining public healthcare.

The case exemplifies the NPA’s efforts to disrupt criminal networks and hold officials accountable for crimes against the public, particularly in under-resourced healthcare facilities.
