The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has been granted court approval to auction off R326m in assets linked to Hangwani Maumela, a tenderpreneur accused of orchestrating a R2bn looting scheme at Tembisa Hospital from 2019.The assets, including luxury cars, high-end homes, and a family trust, will be sold to fund the Gauteng health department.Forensic investigations revealed that Maumela and his family misdeclared directorships of 14 entities, siphoning R410m from the hospital.The NPA argues this constitutes grand-scale fraud, corruption, and money laundering.Civil organisations welcome the judgment, emphasizing the need for criminal accountability beyond asset recovery.The seizure includes properties in Cape Town, Sandton, and Ballito, as well as high-value vehicles like Lamborghinis and Bentleys.The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption, with the Hawks pursuing criminal charges against Maumela.The probe, triggered by whistleblower Babita Deokaran's report, also implicated other syndicates and hospital employees in embezzlement.The recovered funds will be ringfenced for public healthcare, with calls for transparency in their use.
