Ogun market demolition sparks outrage as traders lose N500m

Traders in Ogun State are protesting after their market was demolished without prior notice, resulting in losses exceeding N500 million.Mrs.Kabira Ajiboye, an affected trader, revealed that officials from the Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning had previously planned to demolish the market during the 2023 local government election but abandoned the plan after traders explained they had paid their rents. This time, however, the demolition occurred at 2:00 a.m.without any warning, leaving traders to discover the destruction of their goods and properties upon arrival at the market.

Ajiboye criticized the authorities for not considering the traders' livelihoods, urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to provide an alternative location for business operations. Many traders had taken loans to finance their businesses, now facing uncertainty about recovering from the losses. The State Commissioner for Urban and Physical Planning, Tpl.Tunji Odunlami, refused to comment on the incident.

The traders' call for compensation and support highlights the tension between urban planning initiatives and the economic impact on local communities.
