How Social Media Influencers Are Shaping Kenya’s Political Discourse Ahead of 2027
Paul Waiganjo, a philanthropist turned politician and aspiring MP for Ol Kalou constituency, has officially exited the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) after losing in the party nominations held on May 9.
Waiganjo claimed the nomination exercise was not free and fair, alleging favouritism and irregularities that disadvantaged his bid for the party ticket. He made the announcement publicly on May 29 during a function in Nyandarua County attended by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano.
Waiganjo stated that he could no longer remain in DCP, accusing the party linked to Rigathi Gachagua of failing to uphold credible internal democratic processes. He further alleged that individuals were ferried from other constituencies to influence voting outcomes in favour of his rival. In the nomination results, Sammy Ngotho emerged victorious with 12,957 votes, while Waiganjo followed with 4,978 votes.
Following his exit, Waiganjo hinted that he may align with the Kenya Kwanza coalition, saying he would consult his supporters on his next political move.Rebecca Miano welcomed his remarks and encouraged him to join the ruling coalition, describing it as a united team focused on development.DCP later congratulated Ngotho for winning the nomination, noting that he will now represent the party in the upcoming by-election.Ngotho previously vied for the Ol Kalou seat in 2022 under the UDA ticket and later served in the Office of the Deputy President. The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of MP David Njuguna Kiaraho in March.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has scheduled the by-election for July 16, setting the stage for a competitive race between DCP, UDA, and other contenders.
