Ishaq Dar Meets Marco Rubio to Discuss Bilateral Relations and Regional Peace
Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir reached Tehran on Friday evening to continue Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the ongoing US-Iran conflict.According to ISPR, he was warmly received by Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
During the visit, CDF Munir is set to discuss US-Iran negotiations, regional security, and other strategic matters, and will meet senior Iranian officials. The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Pakistan’s role, stating that Pakistan remains the primary interlocutor between Washington and Tehran.
The visit follows earlier trips by Pakistani officials, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who have met top Iranian leadership to revive stalled talks. The first round of direct US-Iran talks took place in Islamabad in April after a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire, but ended without an agreement.President Donald Trump later extended the ceasefire indefinitely at the request of CDF Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.Key issues impeding progress include Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions, Strait of Hormuz security, and broader regional concerns. While negotiations are currently at a standstill, Pakistan continues to act as a facilitator, relaying messages between Tehran and Washington.PM Shehbaz is also scheduled to visit China to discuss the US-Iran conflict.
Iran is reviewing a new US proposal, seeking release of frozen assets, lifting of blockades, and security guarantees for Lebanon, while the US insists on cessation of attacks on Israel and Gulf bases and constraints on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The mediation efforts come amid global pressure for a diplomatic resolution to the war that has disrupted the Middle East and global trade.
