Pakistan’s cotton imports rise amid falling domestic prices and industry pressure

Pakistan has emerged as the largest buyer of US cotton for the second consecutive week despite a noticeable decline in domestic cotton and phutti prices during the Eidul Azha holidays.

According to market data, cotton prices fell significantly in both Sindh and Punjab, with Sindh seeing a drop of Rs2,000 per maund to Rs21,000 and Punjab experiencing a decline of Rs1,000 per maund to Rs22,000.Phutti prices also decreased by Rs1,500 per 40 kilograms, reflecting continued pressure on the local cotton market.Industry experts believe further price declines may follow due to weak market sentiment and international downturns. At the same time, Pakistan’s textile industry continues to depend heavily on imported cotton due to limited domestic supply.

During the latest reporting week, Pakistan purchased 68,030 bales of US cotton out of a total 112,000 bales sold by the United States, reinforcing its position as a major importer.Mills are also sourcing significant quantities from Brazil to meet production needs.Analysts point out that global cotton prices have also fallen, adding to instability in the local market.

Industry stakeholders, including cotton ginners and textile associations, have raised concerns over rising operational costs, high taxation, expensive energy tariffs, and financial constraints.

They have urged both federal and provincial governments to provide relief in upcoming budgets to support the struggling cotton and textile value chain.

Meanwhile, India’s decision to remove import duties on cotton has been highlighted as a competitive policy move that could strengthen its textile exports, offering a contrast to Pakistan’s policy environment.Experts argue that Pakistan needs similar reforms to improve competitiveness and ensure stable raw material supply for its textile sector.
