The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education has announced a comprehensive inquiry into the increasing number of school fires, destruction of property and student unrest reported in learning institutions across Kenya.
Committee Chairperson Julius Melly, who is also the Tinderet MP, said the investigation aims to identify the root causes of the recurring incidents and develop recommendations to restore stability in schools.
According to research findings presented to the committee, major factors contributing to unrest include examination-related pressure, poor relationships between students and teachers, weak systems for addressing student grievances, inadequate guidance and counselling services, overcrowding, poor living conditions in some boarding schools, and drug and substance abuse.
The committee also reviewed previous audits and assessments that highlighted widespread non-compliance with school safety standards, including overcrowded dormitories, insufficient emergency exits, weak emergency preparedness measures and inadequate safety infrastructure.Members of Parliament expressed concern that school unrest continues despite previous reforms and interventions.
Melly noted that the committee will engage various stakeholders, including parents, students, security agencies, religious leaders and education officials, to gather views and identify practical solutions.
Baringo North MP Joseph Makilap linked some of the challenges to changing social dynamics, increased exposure to social media and reduced parental involvement in children's upbringing.
Mandera South MP Abdul Haro argued that school unrest should not be viewed solely as a disciplinary issue, saying it reflects deeper social and educational challenges that require a coordinated response from families, schools and government institutions.
The committee has directed its secretariat to compile previous reports and recommendations on school unrest to ensure lessons from earlier inquiries are considered during the current investigation.
