Trinamool Congress faces internal disputes, resignations and public backlash in West Bengal after electoral setback
A complaint filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar against fellow party MP Kalyan Banerjee over alleged abusive and misogynistic remarks is likely to be referred to a parliamentary committee, according to reports. The matter is currently under consideration by the Lok Sabha Secretary General.
In her letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Ghosh Dastidar alleged that Banerjee repeatedly used verbally abusive language against her inside parliamentary premises.
She further stated that such behaviour reflected misogyny directed not only at her but also at other women members of Parliament, and sought appropriate disciplinary action.
The issue has emerged amid internal tensions within the Trinamool Congress following the party’s poor electoral performance in West Bengal against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The controversy intensified after Ghosh Dastidar resigned from her position as chief of the TMC women’s wing, stating that the party had failed to protect her from alleged harassment by a fellow MP.This development came shortly after she was also replaced as the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, a position assigned to Kalyan Banerjee.
Banerjee, meanwhile, responded strongly to the allegations, rejecting the claims and countering by referring to earlier accusations against Ghosh Dastidar, including her alleged involvement in the Narada sting operation. He also made additional allegations regarding her supposed links to illegal syndicates, escalating the political exchange. The incident has created a fresh controversy within the party and highlighted growing internal rifts.
Parliamentary authorities are now expected to decide whether the matter should be formally examined by a House committee, as allegations of misconduct between sitting MPs continue to draw attention.
