Pawan Khera urges Sonam Wangchuk to end indefinite fast as protest over alleged NEET irregularities enters 20th day

Congress leader Pawan Khera met activist Sonam Wangchuk and other protesters at Jantar Mantar on Friday as Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike over alleged irregularities in the education system and the NEET examination controversy entered its 20th day.

After the meeting, Khera expressed serious concern about Wangchuk's health, stating that the activist's condition had worsened and arguing that risking one's life would not produce results when dealing with what he described as an insensitive government. He said democratic protests should continue but that their methods must evolve instead of endangering lives.

Khera also highlighted the Congress party's 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' campaign, through which it has been raising concerns about alleged examination irregularities across the country. He reiterated the party's demand for transparency in examinations as well as the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.Khera's visit followed the Congress party's formal support for Wangchuk's agitation.A day earlier, Congress general secretary K.C.

Venugopal had appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast because of his deteriorating health, while assuring him that the party would continue supporting his demands.

According to doctors monitoring Wangchuk, he had lost more than nine kilograms by the 19th day of the fast and had entered a critical stage, with prolonged fasting posing the risk of damage to vital organs.

Despite repeated appeals from political leaders and supporters, Wangchuk said he would not end his hunger strike without a meaningful response from the government, arguing that doing so would send the wrong message. The protesting group has also announced a Parliament march on July 20, coinciding with the beginning of the Monsoon session.
