Port Hope man charged after allegedly impersonating first responder and unlawfully entering residence

A 28-year-old man from Port Hope, Ontario, is facing criminal charges after allegedly impersonating a first responder and entering a private home during a medical emergency.

According to Cobourg Police Service, the investigation began in mid-May 2026 after officers received information that an individual had presented himself as an authorised emergency responder and gained entry into a residence without the homeowner’s consent. While inside the home, the man reportedly provided medical assistance to a person experiencing a health emergency. He left the residence once official paramedics arrived at the scene.Police later determined that the individual may have been monitoring emergency radio communications to become aware of incidents as they occurred.

Following further investigation, officers executed a search warrant at a property in Port Hope on May 27, 2026, where they identified and arrested a 28-year-old suspect without incident.

The man has been charged with unlawfully entering a dwelling house and personating a peace officer, both of which are criminal offences under Canadian law.He was released under specific conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Cobourg Police emphasized that members of the public must not enter private residences without permission, even during emergencies, and must avoid falsely representing themselves as emergency personnel.

Authorities also urged residents to allow trained first responders to carry out their duties safely and to report any suspicious behaviour to police immediately. The case highlights concerns about impersonation of emergency services and the potential risks it poses during urgent medical situations.
