President Ruto, First Lady Rachel and Family Attend Historic Madaraka Day Celebrations in Wajir

President William Ruto, together with First Lady Rachel Ruto, attended the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations held on Monday, 1 June 2026, at the newly upgraded 10,000-seater Wajir Stadium in Wajir County.

This year’s national event was historic as it marked the first time an Independence Day celebration of this scale was hosted in Kenya’s North Eastern region, symbolising inclusion and national unity.

The celebrations were held under the theme ‘Education, Skills and the Future’, which emphasised the government’s focus on empowering young people through education, innovation, and technical training to meet the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.The President led the national ceremony accompanied by senior leaders including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his spouse Joyce Kindiki.

In attendance, Kenyans also spotted the First Family’s youngest daughter, Nadia Chemutai Ruto, who walked alongside her parents, drawing public attention for her coordinated and simple outfit that matched the occasion.

President Ruto wore an elegant white Kaunda suit paired with a walking stick symbolising authority and cultural heritage, while First Lady Rachel Ruto dressed in a colourful kitenge outfit layered with a crocheted sweater and minimal accessories, reflecting cultural pride and simplicity.In her remarks, the First Lady reflected on the importance of Madaraka Day as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Kenya’s independence pioneers.

She emphasised that the country’s strength lies in its people’s resilience, knowledge, and skills, noting that investing in education remains key to building a stronger future.

She also highlighted the historic significance of hosting the national celebrations in Wajir, describing it as a strong statement of national unity and inclusion of all regions in Kenya’s development journey.
