President Ruto Hosts First-Ever Madaraka Day Celebrations in Wajir
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has openly criticised President William Ruto over the decision to host the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir County.
In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Gachagua questioned the suitability of holding national celebrations in a region he claims is still struggling with basic service delivery challenges.
He argued that residents of Wajir continue to face serious hardships, including poor road infrastructure, lack of reliable water supply, inadequate healthcare facilities, and a non-functional sewerage system.
According to him, these persistent challenges make it inappropriate to stage celebrations in the county while key development issues remain unresolved.
Gachagua further accused political leaders of being mobilised to praise the government while ordinary citizens continue to experience economic hardship and neglect.
He described the situation in northern Kenya as evidence of poor governance and policy failure, suggesting that residents have little to celebrate despite the national event being held in their region.
He also questioned development priorities, contrasting the construction of a stadium with what he termed more urgent needs such as clean water, schools, and hospitals.
On the other hand, President Ruto used the occasion to highlight government development efforts in the region, including infrastructure improvements and education initiatives. He also emphasised national unity and pledged continued investment in northern Kenya. The event was marked by symbolic gestures, including local elders reportedly gifting the president camels as a sign of appreciation.
The debate reflects ongoing political tensions and differing perspectives on development progress and service delivery in marginalized regions of the country.
