President Ruto Launches Development Projects in Northern Kenya Ahead of Madaraka Day
President William Ruto presided over the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations at the newly built Wajir Stadium, marking a historic first for the North Eastern region of Kenya.The event, held on 1st June 2026, brought together thousands of residents, national leaders, diplomats, and invited guests.
This year’s theme, 'Education, Skills and the Future,' highlighted the government’s focus on technical training, innovation, and skills development as pillars for Kenya’s economic growth.
Wajir was chosen to host the national celebrations as part of a broader effort to promote inclusive development and national integration, reflecting the county’s increasing role in Kenya’s socio-economic agenda.
Ahead of the celebrations, the government completed major infrastructure upgrades, including road repairs, street lighting, water projects, and renovations at Wajir International Airport.President Ruto also commissioned electricity connectivity programmes and other initiatives aimed at boosting local economic activity.
The celebrations featured military displays, cultural performances, and speeches from national leaders, culminating in the President’s address on priorities like education, job creation, and skills development.The event underscores Kenya’s commitment to integrating arid and semi-arid regions into the country’s broader development agenda.
