ODM-aligned Linda Mwananchi faction plans major political rally in Thika to expand Central Kenya outreach

The ODM-aligned Linda Mwananchi faction has announced plans to hold a major political rally in Thika on 14 June as part of its broader nationwide mobilisation campaign ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

The announcement was made during a rally in Machakos by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Secretary-General and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, who expressed optimism about the group’s growing support base.

Omondi projected that the political formation could potentially consolidate up to 16 million votes in the upcoming election, signalling confidence in its mobilisation strategy. He also used the platform to criticise the current administration, accusing President William Ruto of neglecting residents in some regions.

The planned Thika rally is particularly significant as it will mark the faction’s first major political engagement in Kenya’s Central region, an area traditionally considered a stronghold for rival political formations.

Central Kenya has historically posed electoral challenges for ODM and its leadership, including former party leader Raila Odinga, who has made multiple unsuccessful presidential bids.

In the 2022 elections, the region overwhelmingly supported President Ruto, with an estimated 87 percent of voters backing his ticket, while Odinga’s campaign secured a smaller share despite endorsements from key political figures.

The Linda Mwananchi faction, largely composed of ODM members opposed to the Broad-Based Government arrangement, has been conducting rallies across the country, including in Busia, Kitengela, Kakamega, Narok, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Machakos.

The group aims to strengthen its grassroots presence and broaden its influence as political realignments continue to shape Kenya’s electoral landscape ahead of 2027.
