PM Shehbaz Sharif to visit Iran and Turkiye for condolence and bilateral talks on regional cooperation
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to travel to Tehran to attend the funeral prayers of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to the Foreign Office (FO).
FO spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi confirmed during a weekly briefing that the prime minister will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with other federal cabinet members.The visit aims to express Pakistan’s solidarity and support for Iran during a period of national mourning.After completing his engagements in Iran, Prime Minister Shehbaz will proceed to Türkiye on the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
During his visit, he is expected to address a business conference in Istanbul focused on strengthening economic cooperation and investment opportunities between the two countries.
The FO also highlighted Pakistan’s continued role in facilitating indirect US-Iran talks held in Doha, where Pakistani mediators engaged separately with both sides, reportedly making positive progress on aspects of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.Pakistan, alongside Qatar, will continue to support dialogue efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.
Additionally, diplomatic outreach remains ongoing with several countries including Saudi Arabia, China, Bahrain, Iran, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
On security matters, the FO protested to Afghanistan over the Karachi Rangers camp attack, stating evidence of Afghan involvement and announcing possible action against undocumented Afghan nationals in Pakistan.
The briefing also covered broader regional concerns, including rejection of India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, warnings against weaponisation of water resources, and calls for diplomatic resolution of disputes.Other reported developments included a 5.3-magnitude earthquake in parts of Pakistan, flooding risks during the monsoon, asset transfers worth over Rs1.7 billion by NAB, prisoner list exchanges with India, and heightened security cooperation efforts with Saudi Arabia.
Overall, the briefing reflected Pakistan’s active diplomatic engagement across the region, combining high-level foreign visits, conflict mediation efforts, and internal security and environmental challenges.
