US and Iran make diplomatic progress in Doha mediated discussions on ceasefire and MoU implementation

According to reports from Doha, mediators including officials from Qatar and Pakistan have stated that “positive progress” has been achieved in recent indirect discussions between the United States and Iran.

The meetings, held over two days, were part of ongoing diplomatic efforts linked to an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) brokered earlier with the involvement of Qatar and Pakistan, following earlier talks in Switzerland. The Foreign Office confirmed that separate meetings were held with delegations from both the US and Iran.

The discussions reportedly focused on key technical issues, including maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and the unfreezing and utilisation of Iranian financial assets held abroad.

Officials indicated that both sides agreed to continue dialogue in the coming period, with another round of talks expected after the funeral arrangements of Iran’s former supreme leader.

While some US statements suggested possible movement on broader nuclear-related concerns, sources close to the negotiations clarified that nuclear issues were not formally discussed in detail during this round and would be addressed in future sessions.

US officials, however, expressed cautious optimism about the overall diplomatic direction, while Iranian representatives highlighted the importance of establishing communication channels to monitor and report violations of the MoU.

Iranian officials also noted progress on the potential use of frozen assets in Qatar, estimated at around six billion dollars, to support essential imports. The MoU framework includes a temporary ceasefire, reopening of strategic maritime routes, and a roadmap toward a more comprehensive agreement.

Despite differing public narratives from various stakeholders, mediators emphasised that dialogue remains ongoing and structured, with further negotiations expected in the near future.
