Bilawal stresses protection of Gilgit-Baltistan’s rights ahead of elections
During the ongoing election campaign in Gilgit-Baltistan, several leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president MNA Junaid Akbar, were expelled from the region.According to PTI sources, Akbar and his colleagues were briefly detained at a check post before being asked to leave Gilgit-Baltistan.The party shared a video showing Akbar inside a vehicle with a police officer present.
Akbar questioned why Pakistani citizens needed a permit to travel within their own country, describing the move as undemocratic and a tactic to intimidate PTI supporters.
PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram alleged that leaders from other parties were given preferential treatment, including VIP protocol and government-provided transport. The GB government, however, clarified that no arrests were made, and the expulsions were carried out due to violations of election rules.
They emphasised that all political parties were being given a level-playing field and that the Election Commission was ensuring transparent elections.
Former opposition leaders and KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi criticised the treatment of PTI representatives, calling it a threat to democratic norms.
The incident has sparked debate over fairness and transparency in the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan elections, with PTI demanding impartiality and proper adherence to constitutional rights.
