Rising internal debate over CCM succession ahead of 2030 elections

Barely months after the 2025 General Election, internal political discussions within Tanzania’s ruling party CCM are already increasingly focusing on the 2030 presidential succession.

Reports indicate that conversations among senior party and government officials are gradually shifting from governance and development priorities to strategic positioning for future leadership contests.

Political analysts warn that this early focus on succession risks distracting leaders from delivering public services and implementing development programmes.

Within CCM, there are growing signs of informal groupings and political camps forming as aspiring candidates allegedly begin to organise support structures from grassroots levels.

A senior party insider noted that internal party elections scheduled for next year are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape ahead of 2030, as potential contenders seek to strengthen influence within party organs and Parliament.Several senior leaders have publicly cautioned against premature campaigning.

Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba criticised ongoing discussions that link religious affiliations to future leadership ambitions, urging leaders to focus on national development instead of early election debates.

Similarly, CCM Mainland Vice-Chairman Stephen Wasira warned that discussing the 2030 presidency at this stage is inappropriate, stressing unity and development priorities.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has also previously warned government officials with presidential ambitions to step aside and pursue political interests outside government structures.

In Zanzibar, President Hussein Ali Mwinyi rejected proposals to amend constitutional term limits to extend leadership beyond the allowed period, insisting on respecting constitutional provisions.

Analysts remain divided: some argue that early positioning undermines governance and could deepen political divisions, while others say it reflects normal political behaviour as long as CCM’s constitutional rules are followed.Overall, the debate highlights rising internal tensions within CCM as the country gradually moves toward the 2030 election cycle.
