Grant Kekana reflects on Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League success and future significance
Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams expressed immense pride after leading his side to a historic CAF Champions League triumph, securing their second continental title.
The South African giants were crowned ‘Kings of Africa’ after drawing 1–1 with Moroccan club AS FAR in the second leg of the final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday. The result saw Sundowns win 2–1 on aggregate, following their 1–0 victory in the first leg in Pretoria the previous week. The decisive moment in the return leg came when midfielder Teboho Mokoena scored just before half-time, giving Sundowns a crucial advantage.AS FAR managed to level the match in the second half, but Sundowns held firm under pressure.Williams played a key role in preserving the result, producing a vital second-half penalty save when the match was finely poised at 1–1.
Speaking after the match, Williams highlighted the years of consistent effort, heavy travel schedules, and numerous matches played by the squad, saying the team had repeatedly “knocked on the door” over several seasons before finally achieving continental success again.
He also noted that the victory came 10 years after their first CAF Champions League title and served as redemption following last year’s final defeat to Egypt’s Pyramids FC.
The Bafana Bafana captain thanked the club’s ownership, technical staff, supporters, and the broader South African football community for their unwavering support and criticism, which he said helped push the team to succeed on the continent.
