The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte may not be shortened despite the prosecution's withdrawal of some witnesses, according to Senate impeachment court spokesperson Atty.Reginald Tongol.

Tongol clarified that the saved trial days could be used for other matters like oral arguments on subpoena issuance, but the overall trial timeline remains uncertain.The House prosecution panel withdrew six witnesses for Article IV, leaving only NBI Director Melvin Matibag as the remaining witness.The trial initially had 11 scheduled days for Article IV, which involves allegations of grave threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.and others.

The court's presiding officer, Francis Escudero, mentioned that senator-judges will review motions on July 20, including the prosecution's request for subpoenas related to Duterte's financial records.

While a ruling on the subpoena request is expected by July 20, Tongol noted that the evidence requested is not urgent and may not affect the trial's duration.The court may also consider new legal theories or extend the timeline if needed.

The trial's progression highlights the complexity of legal procedures in high-profile cases, balancing procedural rigor with the need for thorough evidence presentation.
