Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend Iran funeral and visit Türkiye during official foreign tour
According to the report, Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership has arrived in Tehran to attend the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was stated to have been assassinated in a US-Israeli strike earlier this year.
The Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir reached Tehran on Friday, where he was received by Iranian officials along with Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who was already present in the Iranian capital.
The visit forms part of a high-level Pakistani delegation that includes Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and senior political figures including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Murad Ali Shah.
The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the premier’s visit is aimed at expressing condolences to the Iranian leadership and people while reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran during a period of grief and instability.After completing his engagements in Tehran, the prime minister is expected to travel onward to Türkiye.
Meanwhile, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani also arrived in Tehran leading another delegation to participate in the funeral prayers and burial arrangements.
The report highlights that multiple regional countries, including China, Afghanistan, and states from the Caucasus region, are sending representatives to the ceremonies.
The funeral process is described as a major state and religious event, with planned stops across key Iranian religious cities including Qom, Karbala, Najaf, and Mashhad.Iranian officials have framed the large public turnout expected at the ceremonies as a symbol of national unity and resistance.
The situation is presented in the context of ongoing regional tensions following a ceasefire between Iran and the United States after earlier conflict escalation in the Middle East.
