Sentencing of Molly's killer delayed amid mental health defence

Tony and Kate Ticehurst were bracing for closure after the tragic murder of their daughter Molly in 2024, expecting the sentencing of Daniel Billings to conclude a prolonged legal ordeal. However, a recent phone call revealed that the sentencing, initially set for 1 June 2026, has been postponed to at least September.

The defence has introduced Billings' mental health as a factor, claiming he suffered from depression during the attack, potentially reducing his charge from murder to manslaughter under NSW law. This development has added to the family's distress, nearly two years after Molly’s death.

Billings had previously confessed to the stabbing and pleaded guilty, and the attack sparked national debate about domestic violence and government protection of women.

The delay has been criticised by the family’s local MP, Phil Donato, as an added denial of justice, particularly since the Crown only became aware of the mental health claim on 15 May, close to the original sentencing date. The case underscores ongoing challenges in balancing legal processes with victims’ need for closure.
