Lagos State prosecutes over 100 offenders for illegal occupation of road medians and environmental violations
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the leadership of Nigeria’s National Assembly, specifically Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, to urgently investigate alleged diversion and mismanagement of over N6.3 billion in constituency project funds.
According to SERAP, the allegations are contained in the Auditor-General of the Federation’s 2022 annual report, which highlighted multiple cases of financial irregularities across several federal ministries, departments, and agencies.
The organisation, in a letter dated June 27, 2026, demanded that the National Assembly refer the matter to anti-corruption agencies for thorough investigation and possible prosecution of those found culpable.SERAP further insisted that any diverted or unaccounted public funds must be recovered and returned to the national treasury.
It also requested full disclosure of contractors and companies involved in the constituency projects, including their shareholders and beneficial owners, especially those who allegedly received payments without executing projects.
The group gave the National Assembly a seven-day ultimatum to respond, warning that it would initiate legal action if no action is taken within the deadline.
The Auditor-General’s report reportedly identified issues such as payments into private accounts, inflated contracts, procurement breaches, and unexecuted projects across institutions like EHORECON, NAPTIP, NILDS, and several federal educational institutions.SERAP stressed that such corruption in constituency projects undermines public services and worsens hardship for vulnerable Nigerians.
It argued that these actions violate the Nigerian Constitution, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, and the Public Procurement Act, all of which demand transparency and accountability in public finance management.
The organisation maintained that the National Assembly must demonstrate leadership by ensuring proper oversight and accountability in the use of public funds.
