According to the sixth National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6), there has been a substantial improvement in digital access and related indicators among Indian women between 2019–2021 and 2023–24.The proportion of women who have used the internet at least once has nearly doubled, rising from 33.3% in the 2019–2021 period to 64.3% in 2023–24.This sharp increase highlights a major shift in digital inclusion and access to online services for women across the country. The survey also reports notable progress in financial inclusion. The percentage of women having a bank or savings account increased from 78.6% to 89% during the same period, indicating improved access to formal financial systems.Similarly, ownership of personal mobile phones among women rose from 53.9% to 63.6%, further supporting digital connectivity and access to communication tools.Beyond digital and financial indicators, the NFHS-6 data also shows marginal improvement in health-related practices. The use of hygienic menstrual protection methods among women aged 15–24 increased from 77.6% to 79.
2%, supported by government initiatives such as the Menstrual Hygiene Scheme under the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram and affordable sanitary products through the Janaushadhi scheme.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that these findings reflect steady progress in maternal and child health, nutrition, women’s empowerment, and access to essential services.
However, the report also highlights emerging concerns such as rising non-communicable diseases, lifestyle-related risks, and the dual burden of undernutrition and obesity among adults.Covering nearly 6.79 lakh households across 715 districts, the NFHS-6 provides critical data for policy planning and programme implementation.Overall, the findings underline India’s continued progress towards inclusive development and Sustainable Development Goals.
