Social media companies settle US school district lawsuit over alleged product addiction and youth mental health impacts

Major social media companies have agreed to pay approximately US$27 million to settle a lawsuit brought by a rural Kentucky school district that accused them of designing addictive platforms that contributed to a teen mental health crisis and increased strain on school resources. The settlement involves Meta Platforms (owner of Facebook and Instagram), Snap Inc., TikTok, and Google’s YouTube.

According to disclosed documents, Meta agreed to pay US$9 million, while Snap and TikTok each contributed US$8 million, and YouTube settled for just over US$2 million.YouTube also agreed to provide training programs to help educators better integrate its video tools into classrooms.

The case was considered a bellwether trial and was set to be the first major federal test of school district claims alleging that social media companies knowingly designed addictive features such as endless scrolling and autoplay video.

The Breathitt County School District argued these features contributed to rising mental health challenges among students, including anxiety, depression, and behavioural issues, which in turn increased demands on counselling and administrative resources. The district had sought more than US$60 million in damages to support mental health programming and digital safety education.

More than 1,300 other school districts have filed similar lawsuits across the United States, and these cases are expected to proceed to trial in the coming years, with the next scheduled for 2027.

Across the broader litigation landscape, more than 6,000 lawsuits have been filed against social media companies by individuals, schools, and state attorneys general. Some estimates suggest potential liability could reach up to US$400 billion.

Recent jury verdicts in related cases have added pressure on the companies, including awards of millions in damages for emotional distress and a separate ruling ordering Meta to pay hundreds of millions in penalties.

While the companies maintain that they have resolved the Breathitt County case amicably and continue to improve safety measures, the settlement may signal openness to broader negotiations across similar lawsuits.
