State Police Reform to Empower Governors as Chief Security Officers

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State emphasized that establishing state police forces will empower governors to act as genuine chief security officers, addressing persistent insecurity in the country.

Speaking at the Arise News Town Hall Summit, Lawal highlighted that the current command and control structure of security operations is not under the direct authority of state governors, which has hindered effective crime prevention.

He argued that when state governments take full responsibility for security within their jurisdictions, police forces would be better equipped with adequate personnel and resources to tackle criminal activities.

Lawal praised the recent development of state police as a positive step, allowing governors to fulfill their security duties while enabling citizens to hold them accountable.

He stressed that the creation of state police would significantly reduce challenges related to insecurity and enable states to officially recognize governors as chief security officers.

While dismissing allegations of abuse by state executives, Lawal acknowledged the existence of security apparatuses in most states but urged lawmakers to implement safeguards to prevent misuse. The summit aimed to foster national consensus on state police reforms and broader security strategies to combat ongoing insecurity across Nigeria.
