Study Finds Link Between Social Media Use and ADHD Symptoms in Teen Boys

A new study by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco explores the connection between addictive social media use and ADHD symptoms in adolescent boys. The research followed over 11,000 U.S.adolescents aged 12-16, tracking their social media habits and ADHD symptoms annually.

Findings revealed that increases in addictive social media use were associated with rising ADHD symptoms one year later, particularly among boys aged 14-15.This correlation was not observed in reverse, suggesting social media use may exacerbate ADHD symptoms rather than being a pre-existing condition.

Lead author Jason Nagata highlighted that social media platforms are designed to provide constant stimulation, encouraging task-switching and immediate gratification, which can impair attention and executive control needed for schoolwork and daily life.

The study notes that boys are twice as likely as girls to be diagnosed with ADHD, though no clear link was found between social media use and ADHD in girls.Experts emphasize the importance of parental modeling of healthy screen habits, as parental screen use strongly predicts children's screen use.

The research underscores the need for further investigation into how digital environments impact adolescent mental health during critical developmental stages.
