Super Falcons announce 23-player squad for Senegal friendlies led by Oshoala, Ajibade and Nnadozie
Nigeria’s Super Falcons started their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on a positive note as they secured a 2-1 victory over Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses in a friendly match played in Ikenne-Remo.
The encounter, which took place on Friday, served as an important test for both teams as they fine-tune their squads ahead of the continental tournament in Morocco. The Super Falcons got off to a strong start and took the lead in the 32nd minute after they were awarded a penalty.Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, marking her return to the national team since the WAFCON 2024 final. Her composure and experience gave Nigeria the early advantage and boosted the team’s confidence.Nigeria continued to dominate possession and dictated the tempo of the game, putting Senegal under sustained pressure.Their control paid off again just before half-time in the 43rd minute when Toni Payne finished off a well-worked team move to double the lead.Payne’s return to the squad also added more creativity and strength to the midfield and attack.
In the second half, the Super Falcons maintained their structure and managed the game well, limiting Senegal’s attacking opportunities for most of the match. However, Senegal managed to pull one goal back in the 86th minute, creating a tense finish.Despite the late pressure, Nigeria stayed organised and saw out the game to claim the win. This match was the first-ever meeting between both sides, adding extra significance to the encounter. Both teams are expected to meet again in another friendly on June 8 at the same venue as preparations continue.
Head coach Justine Madugu will be looking to further assess his squad and refine tactics ahead of WAFCON, where Nigeria aim to defend their continental title.
