EAC proposes new regional roaming framework to lower communication costs and improve cross-border trade
Tanzania has strengthened its commitment to building an inclusive digital economy during the 5th Tanzania School of Community Networks (TSCN 2026), held in Tarime, Mara region.
The forum brought together more than 50 stakeholders from different parts of Tanzania and neighbouring Kenya, including ICT experts, policymakers, researchers, youth representatives, and community network leaders.
The event focused on how rural connectivity can be transformed into a key driver of productivity, entrepreneurship, education, and social inclusion in line with Tanzania’s Vision 2050 development goals.
Organised by the Tanzania Community Networks Polytechnic College in collaboration with the Tarime Community Network Cooperative Society Limited, the meeting highlighted the importance of expanding internet access beyond urban centres.
Participants discussed community-centred connectivity models, sustainable rural infrastructure, digital skills development, and local content innovation.
Special attention was given to gender inclusion in digital transformation and the responsible use of artificial intelligence to support education, healthcare, agriculture, and local enterprises while ensuring ethical governance and data sovereignty.
A major outcome of the forum was the announcement of the Tanzania Community Networks Company Limited, a new national institution tasked with coordinating investments, providing technical support, and expanding affordable internet access to underserved communities.
Several cooperative societies also endorsed the company to begin the telecommunications licensing process on their behalf, marking a significant step towards community-led telecom services.
The event also showcased a STEM centre at the Tanzania Community Networks Polytechnic College in Dodoma, supported by STEMpower Inc and partners, aimed at strengthening practical science and technology education.
Sponsors such as the Universal Communications Service Access Fund supported the forum, reinforcing government efforts to ensure digital inclusion reaches rural and marginalised communities across the country.
