Tanzania's CBRM Project Aims to Maintain 15,000km of Roads Year-Round

The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) has initiated a three-year Community-Based Routine Maintenance (CBRM) project, funded by the World Bank, to ensure over 15,000 kilometers of roads remain functional throughout the year, particularly during rainy seasons.

The program engages local communities in routine maintenance tasks such as clearing vegetation, repairing drainage systems, and removing debris to prevent road degradation.

By involving 302 community groups across seven districts, the initiative addresses Tanzania's infrastructure challenges through decentralized maintenance and local employment.

This approach not only extends road lifespan but also creates economic opportunities for residents, ensuring roads remain accessible for critical activities like healthcare, education, and trade. The project's success could serve as a model for other regions facing similar infrastructure issues.
