Donald Trump declared fit for duty after comprehensive medical examination at Walter Reed
Tulsi Gabbard has announced she will resign from her role as the United States Director of National Intelligence, with her departure set to take effect on 30 June.
Gabbard said her decision is driven by personal circumstances, specifically her husband’s recent diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer, which she said requires her full support and presence during his treatment.
In her resignation letter shared publicly, she thanked US President Donald Trump for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence over the past year and a half, stating she was grateful for the trust placed in her.
President Trump publicly acknowledged her resignation, praising her work in the role and stating that she wished to focus on supporting her husband through his illness. He also confirmed that Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas would serve as acting director following her departure.
However, according to a source cited by Reuters, there are claims within parts of the administration that Gabbard may have been effectively pushed out due to ongoing tensions with the White House.
These tensions reportedly include disagreements over foreign policy, particularly approaches to Iran’s nuclear ambitions and broader military strategy in the Middle East.
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate, has long been known for her opposition to US foreign military interventions. She later left the Democratic Party, became an independent, and ultimately endorsed Donald Trump.
Her tenure has also been marked by internal disputes over intelligence initiatives and policy direction, including criticism of her revocation of security clearances for some former officials and involvement in declassification efforts.
Her resignation marks the end of a politically complex period in the intelligence leadership, shaped by both personal challenges and broader geopolitical disagreements within the US government.
