Ugandan Health Ministry Advises Ebola Survivors on Post-Recovery Precautions

The Ministry of Health in Uganda has issued guidance for men who have recovered from Ebola, advising them to abstain from sexual activity for up to six months or use condoms consistently.

Health experts explained that although patients may test negative for Ebola in their blood after recovery, the virus can still linger in bodily fluids such as semen for several months. This advisory aims to reduce the risk of sexual transmission of the virus.Prior to being discharged, survivors are tested to ensure they are free of the virus in their bloodstream.

The recommendation has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Ugandans questioning why abstinence is necessary even after a negative blood test, while others support the caution as a necessary public health measure.

The ministry has also intensified monitoring at key points like Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya to ensure early detection and rapid response, including passenger screenings, thermal scanners, and laboratory preparedness.

This guidance underscores the need for continued vigilance even after recovery, highlighting the long-term persistence of Ebola in bodily fluids and the importance of protecting partners and the wider community.
