US reiterates support for Pakistan’s self-defence rights amid UN counterterrorism strategy vote

The United States has reaffirmed its support for Pakistan’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks amid rising tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and ongoing debates at the United Nations over its global counterterrorism framework.

According to the US State Department, the Pakistani population has suffered extensively due to terrorism, and Washington continues to support Islamabad’s right to respond to such threats.

This statement comes after Pakistan carried out action against alleged terrorist infrastructure following a recent attack in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar area targeting Pakistan Rangers Sindh.

The remarks coincided with the ninth review of the United Nations Global Counterterrorism Strategy (GCTS), which was adopted by 140 votes after consensus could not be reached. The United States, Israel, and Argentina voted against the resolution, while Japan abstained due to what it later described as a technical error.

Washington criticised the draft as overly lengthy, outdated, and lacking focus, arguing that it diluted core counterterrorism priorities with excessive language and ignored key US concerns.

Pakistan, along with several other countries including members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), expressed disappointment that their proposals were not incorporated.

Pakistan’s UN envoy highlighted that the country has suffered significant human losses in the fight against terrorism, stating that more than 1,200 Pakistanis were killed in terrorist incidents in the past year.

He also called for reforms in global counterterrorism mechanisms, stronger regulation of digital platforms, and greater fairness in international sanctions regimes.

The envoy emphasised that terrorism is an evolving global threat requiring coordinated multilateral action and warned against politicisation of counterterrorism frameworks.
