Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire in Gilgil leaves 16 students dead, video reveals extensive damage

Families across Kenya are mourning after a tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which claimed the lives of 16 students and left several others injured. The incident occurred on May 28, when a fire broke out in one of the school’s dormitories, later identified as Meline Waithera Dormitory.Authorities have since arrested seven students who are suspected of deliberately starting the fire while their fellow learners were asleep.Investigations are still ongoing, with CCTV footage reportedly capturing the moment the blaze began.A video circulating from Ramogi TV has revealed the devastating aftermath inside the dormitory, showing the scale of destruction left behind. The once lively sleeping quarters, which housed around 250 students, were left completely charred.Metal beds were burnt black, twisted, and in some cases broken by the intense heat. There were no mattresses or bedding left, and students’ belongings such as suitcases were scattered and damaged across the floor.Walls were heavily blackened by smoke, while burnt blankets, buckets, and debris covered the wet and dirty floor. The dormitory bathroom block also suffered severe damage, with sinks covered in soot and doors barely intact.Outside, empty fire extinguishers and buckets were found scattered, reflecting desperate attempts to control the fire. Some concerns have been raised about possible congestion due to the dormitory layout. The tragedy has left families and the wider public in shock as investigations continue into how the deadly incident unfolded.
