Vietnam President To Lam’s planned Senate visit in Manila canceled
Vietnam canceled the scheduled visit of President To Lam to the Philippine Senate as well as his planned meeting with Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on June 1, 2026.According to the Senate’s Office of International Relations and Protocol, the cancellation came from the Vietnamese government. No official explanation was provided for the decision. The change affected the Senate’s schedule, as the plenary session had earlier been moved from its usual 3:00 p.m.start to 5:00 p.m.to accommodate the expected visit of the Vietnamese leader.
Despite the cancellation of the Senate-related activities, President To Lam continued with other official engagements during his state visit to the Philippines. He arrived in Manila on May 31 and met with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.at Malacañang on June 1 for bilateral discussions. The meeting was followed by a state luncheon hosted in his honor.
The visit takes place during the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Philippines, highlighting the importance of ties between the two Southeast Asian nations.
Discussions during the visit are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, regional security, and maritime affairs, areas that are increasingly important for both countries.
While the cancellation of the Senate visit attracted attention because of the lack of an official reason, there is no indication in the report that it affects the broader objectives of President To Lam’s state visit or the ongoing diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and the Philippines.
