The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has announced that its Forensic Toxicology Unit has achieved ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for drug testing methods, marking a significant milestone in forensic science.

This accreditation, which verifies adherence to international standards, covers tests for carbon monoxide poisoning and drug identification in forensic specimens.These methods are critical in investigating deaths from fires, poisonings, overdoses, and unexplained causes.

With a backlog of over 6,792 toxicology cases, the accreditation aims to enhance the reliability and speed of forensic testing, supporting both criminal investigations and public health initiatives.

MEC Mireille Wenger emphasized that the accreditation strengthens trust in forensic evidence, ensuring families and the justice system receive accurate answers.The lab’s integration with the Forensic Pathology Service has improved collaboration with pathologists, reducing turnaround times.Although the tests were already conducted, the accreditation provides independent validation of the lab’s rigorous standards.Regular international proficiency testing ensures ongoing compliance, reinforcing the Western Cape’s commitment to quality forensic services.
